Today was Tony's first Pinewood Derby for Cub Scouts. Back in December, he and Chris started their design. Ever safety conscious Tony insisted he needed to wear "safety" glasses and earplugs as they worked with dad's tools.
Here is the finished product...."The Python." Tony painted it himself and gave dad instructions as to the placement of all decals, etc... 143 is his Pack #.
I'm certain if you asked him, the highlight of Tony's morning was the juice and chocolate donuts!
THE TRACK.
This is high tech. stuff. The track is connected to a sophisticated computer system that records times to one hundreth of a second! If you look close at the screen you can see Tony's name at the bottom...this was his first of six heats. They shuffle the cars so each heat is random, yet the cars race in each lane once. Amazing really. And quick! 70 cars and the whole thing only took one hour.
Here you can see "The Python" in last place at the top of the picture. That's pretty much where he placed each time, although he came in 2nd place once. Chris already has design ideas for next year - the competition was stiffer than he expected! 
Each boy got a trophy for participating....the winners got BIGGER ones of course. Tony and his best friend Sam show off theirs. The car that won for best design looked like a Zamboni...very cool! I intended to get a picture but there was just too much chaos at the end.
It was really a fun experience for the boys (and Dads). Siblings can enter cars in a special heat that they run in the end. Livie is already planning her hot pink car for next year!!!! And Nancy...dig out Chris' old cars, we need to bring them out of retirement!STAY WARM!

Good job Toots anc Chris! Your car is super cool. I think you are a winner no matter what place you took. I can't stop laughing at your Safety First picture. What was so loud, Tony?? Funny. Glad you had a fun day...can't wait to see next year's model.

i'm a little surprised you finished last so much, i would of flipped the track over, and walked out of that place. chris, you need to make carbon fiber wheels and grease up the axels and put a fin in the front to creat downforce for gripping the track. come on.

Awesome Python car Tony. It sounds like next year you may need a quicker animal. Maybe a cheetah or leopard. Chris, start working on some prototypes. I expect to see a track set up in the basement when we visit.

Tony....good for you!!! Just keep those cars coming....you and Dad will get the winner......but, then if Grandpa Jackie calls Italy...no fear...you will win hands down...all he has to do is mention my name....or we could call a cousin in Scottsdale that sells Ferraris......good luck and keep it up....everyone is proud of you and Dad!!
