Corn, Caches and Combines

This place called Nebraska, is starting to grow on us. We have just passed the 5 yr mark since we moved down here and every year we learn more and more about corn and soybeans, planting, harvest and the like. We had a very wet and cool October after a phenomenal growing season. Harvest is finally picking up, but it sounds like it will run clear into December as farmers wait for the corn and beans to dry out. This past weekend, because it is hunting season here, we chose to avoid the woods. Instead of a hike, we loaded our GPS to do some geocaching in the surrounding farmland. Temps were in the 70's, what a treat!

This is not an uncommon sight everywhere you go. Farmers are busy moving in and out of their fields and you just have to WAIT. At our first stop we found this sweet baby checking us out...

Because caches must be on public land, we found 4 out of the 5 we loaded in old, historic cemeteries out in the middle of corn fields. Very interesting to say the least. Each one usually has historic information posted, along with who is buried where. We are always humbled by the sheer number of babies and children buried in these plots.

Tony struck a pose amidst one of his most favorite things...corn. Pretty soon all the corn will be gone.

Nebraska Gold....soon to be High Fructose Corn Syrup...a.k.a. job security for Chris!

Chris received his Christmas present of an Auto GPS a bit early this year. We loaded up MARLENE (sister of Brian's CHARLENE, and a distant cousin to Faron's DARLENE) and by entering the coordinates she would guide us to the general spot, then our handheld GPS would take us the rest of the way. Here are Liv, Chris and Nelson heading the search.

Found it! What a GREAT spot to hide a cache - inside an old rusted car. Nelson and I stayed up at the top of the hill. Everyone made it down in one piece, by the way.

After logging in the cache, Liv headed back up the hill but Tony and Chris did a little exploring. I loved Tony's approach to crossing the creek. Hey, at least he didn't get wet!!!!

Nelson patiently waits for the next stop....this little wiener dog had a BLAST running through the fields with us. Have a great week!

What a fun weekend. Geo caching looks like fun. Sally wants to do that only if the hidden treasure is under a shell on some nice beach near a beautiful ocean.

Hello Liv, T-bone and Nelson!
